Serious Windows Vulnerability

Microsoft has advised there is a serious vulnerability with the Windows operating system. For details refer to this link.

Most leading computer security companies have declared this a serious problem for computer users.

The SANS Internet Storm Center has declared it as “…a significant new threat.”, and “Users are advised to take immediate specific action to contain the impact.”

Because of the seriousness of this problem, TechOnline is implementing the special measures as recommended by The SANS Internet Storm Center, for details refer to this link.

To complete the implementation of these special measures you must implement a security update. Please follow this instruction:

  • Double click on the new icon on your desktop, it is a RED T and is titled TECHONLINE SECURITY UPDATE

NOTE: As a result of this security update you may not be able view certain types of images.

How to Stay Safe

Although the security update should keep your computer secure, it is also advisable to follow these guidelines:

  • Do not open email that is not from a trusted source
  • Do not open any email attachment unless 100% certain it is safe
  • Do not click on any Internet links in email
  • Do not visit any website unless you are sure it can be trusted
  • Stop using Instant Messaging until this high risk period is over
  • Stop using Peer to Peer programs (Kazaa, Limewire etc.) until this high risk period is over

The vulnerability applies to the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
